In this column we take a look at unusual Renault products.
Playing games – it’s something Renault drivers have always liked to do. And probably still do. In the 1950s Renault came up with a nice little box with all the necessary gear to play a game of checkers or snakes and ladders. Renault customers were given the set, which included all the necessary bits and pieces, including a miniature dice.
The checkers board is one of many. But the Le tour de France board game uses some very specific drawings. The corners of the board show a Renault 4CV, a Dauphine and a Frégate, which give an indication of when this set was issued. It must have been in the second half of the 1950s. The mention of Concours Figaro 1956 on the lid confirms this, too.
The games rules were written out in the board’s centre and 62 small drawings show another few Renaults, among them a Goélette and a Domaine, apart from some detail drawings of the 4CV, Dauphine and Frégate mentioned before. The idea of the game is to pass the prison or the skull and bones. Complete sets are offered for sale on Ebay every now and then, with prices starting at around 50 Euros now.
