A cigarette, Sir?

In this column we take a look at unusual Renault products.

Roaming the market stalls on shows and autojumbles, the Renault enthusiast can bump into something unusual regularly. It happened in Reims in early March, when we were attracted to this little black box, about two by three inches in size. Our attention was mainly attracted to the fact that it wore a logo on its Bakelite lid. There was a figure on it, in white with blue and red accents and there was the name ‘RENAULT’. After having opened it, the inside of the box gives away when it was made. It mentions: ‘Visite des Usines Renault salon de l’Automobile 1933’. Apparently factory visits were undertaken from the motor show in Paris to the Renault plant that year. Visitors must have been gifted this little box – a cigarette holder. It’s unsure whether it contained any cigarettes at the time of presenting. If so, these must have been miniature cigarettes, looking at the size of this little box. We kindly asked if it could be taken out of its showcase in order to take a good picture. The asking price of 600 Euros was perhaps a bit too much for a sly joke.
