Anyone who wants to come home with stories will have to travel to do so. And so I took a plane to Valencia in Spain, followed by a few days in the Murcia and Mazzarón area. There I met some enthusiastic Renault owners.
Yet that description is not specific enough. In all cases, they are FASA-Renaults. Seemingly familiar models that were all built at the FASA factory in Valladolid. Cars with their specific details because the Spanish government at the time was very capricious in setting requirements regarding the use of domestically produced parts.
But how do you get a certain amount of people with fine Spanish Renaults? That was also a question for me. And no matter how well I made contact via Facebook for numerous reports over the years, the requests on the profiles and groups of Spanish Renault clubs remained virtually unanswered.
Then I got in touch with a Spaniard who offered his 1979 Renault 5 GTL on the internet. A car I was interested in. A Renault 5 three-door with the first type of dashboard. By now unaffordable in France, but still reasonably priced in Spain. In contacting this man, I told of my desire to come and do reports on FASA-Renaults in Spain. Coincidentally, a good friend of his supplies parts for classic cars, including Renault. This man in question has a nice collection himself, and through his customers he naturally knows exactly where to find interesting and beautiful cars in the immediate area. So one Saturday morning, I arrived at the company in question at the wheel of a beautiful Renault 7 and there was a whole row of FASA-Renaults waiting. Exactly the cars that had been announced beforehand. Locations for photography had already been selected. Because capturing six cars in one day is a matter of working very hard. But as you will see in the next dozen pages, it all worked out just fine. Javier and Eusebio, thanks for organising it, without you it would not have been possible....
