Renault 4

The art of it

In 1981, to mark the 20th anniversary of the Renault 4, the German importer had artists from all over the world depict the popular model in their own way. This gave rise to the idea of organising a competition and giving the public the opportunity to let their imagination run wild.

Participants could apply for six different categories: caricature, illustration, photo, photo from a family album, collage/assembly and children's drawings. In total, Renault Germany received no less than 7,368 entries, all from people who, in one way or another, had their own image of a Renault 4. The jury, which included a member of the Renault Germany board of directors, editors-in-chief of photography and art magazines, an art director and a photographer, had the task of selecting the 24 best entries from all these artistic and brilliant works, which would be displayed at all Renault dealerships in Germany. Many fine entries could not be shown, and to ease the pain a little, Renault Germany published a colourful booklet after the event with the seventy best and most exceptional entries.
