Renault 20 TL 1975

Intermediate

Shortly after Renault entered the top European class with the six-cylinder Renault 30 in 1975, a smaller-engined version appeared, the Renault 20. The car differed in many respects and apart from the much smaller engine from the Renault 16 TX, it came with a four-speed manual transmission as standard.

Externally, the Renault 20 is immediately recognisable by its large, flat headlights and the car also stands on 13-inch wheels with hubcaps. Since the wheels are smaller than those of the Renault 30, the front wings have a smaller aperture. Things like the trim strips on the sides and the rubber strips on the bumpers fitted to the 30TS are omitted on the 20.

A very basic L version

In the interior, there are also many particular features for the 'poor man's' Renault 30. For example, this model has Renault 16  front seats and there is less equipment than specified the top model. Initially, there were two versions of the Renault 20, the TL version shown here and a very basic L version that could be recognised by the absence of hubcaps and the black frame around the tailgate screen. L and TL drivers had to do without power steering but a GTL version of the 20 with a 1,647 cc engine was released later, but it did come with power steering as standard.
