M/S Hamnen serves the Port of Gothenburg as an inspection and representation vessel, operated by the Harbour Master’s Office. Acting as an extension of the port authority, the vessel is responsible for maintaining safety and accessibility throughout the entire port aream from Torshamnen in the west to Lärje in the east, around the clock, all year round.
M/S Hamnen also plays a key role in Port Security, operating as a maritime unit under the ISPS Code. In addition to these duties, the vessel is used for official representation, guided tours for visitors, and to represent the corporate port entity in matters related to port infrastructure.
The battery on board has a capacity equivalent to roughly eight Tesla Model 3 batteries and weighs approximately 4.5 tons. A full charge provides 7–8 hours of operation at an average cruising speed of 6 knots.
The vessel was originally built in 1979. It is 20.33 meters long and 5.77 meters wide, with space for up to 48 people. In 1999, the engine was replaced, a bow thruster was installed, and the salon was refurbished.
In 2023, M/S Hamnen was converted to electric propulsion. The retrofit included a new wheelhouse, a renovated salon, and an improved working environment. The vessel is now powered by a 520 kWh battery system that enables 90% electric operation.
