The Port of Gothenburg’s inspection and representation vessel, M/S Hamnen, has been in service since 1979. In 2023, the vessel underwent a major retrofit to become Sweden’s first fully electrified ship in accordance with the Swedish Transport Agency’s own regulations.
The vessel is always at the center of the action and first on the scene whenever something unexpected occurs in the Port of Gothenburg. M/S Hamnen serves a wide range of purposes, but its core mission is to represent the port authority and ensure that regulations under the port ordinance are upheld. Around the clock, all year round.
M/S Hamnen is in active operation approximately 1,200 hours per year. Previously, its diesel engine consumed 25,000 liters annually, resulting in 67 tons of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to 15% of the Port Authority’s total emissions. These emissions are now eliminated thanks to the vessel’s new electric propulsion system.
With its powerful new battery system, M/S Hamnen can operate on full electric power for at least 90% of its active runtime. A backup diesel engine powered by HVO ensures maximum availability, even under demanding conditions.
This retrofit is not just a technical achievement, it also serves as a powerful symbol of the Port of Gothenburg’s commitment to sustainability. By electrifying and extending the life of the vessel, we are setting a precedent for others in the maritime industry to follow.
