After a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic, it is Agritechnica in Hanover again this year. As per tradition, the world's most important agricultural trade fair will take place from 12 to 18 November at the Hannover exhibition grounds.  We at Women in Ag Magazine will be there, in the run-up to the fair we already spoke to Freya von Czettritz , CEO of DLG Holding, the show organiser.

Agritechnica, the Mecca of agricultural machinery. From all over the world, manufacturers and visitors gather at Hannover exhibition grounds to showcase and view the latest innovations, but also to talk about the possible future of agricultural machinery and techniques. And although agricultural mechanisation is somewhat of a man's world, we find lots of women at the fair too. “If you look at the program of Agritechnica, a variety of topics are available that are relevant to everyone who is active in the field of professional crop production. Why do something specifically for women when the focus is on the content?” ponders Freya Von Czettritz, CEO of the DLG Holding. “But we do have certain activities especially designed for women during the trade fair. These activities are intended to enhance the opportunities for women in the agriculture industry, including networking, knowledge exchange, and furthering their education.”

There is no denying the role of women in agriculture, but it often remains underexposed. During discussion forums we try to focus on topics of interest to women in agriculture, such as career development and business leadership. The aim is to empower and encourage women to succeed in this industry and make an active contribution to agriculture.

At Agritechnica, two events in particular are dedicated to the topic of women in agriculture:

  • The role of women in agriculture, agribusiness and agronomy is changing around the world. Women always have and continue to shape the future of agriculture as managers on their own farms or in companies, research or in the teaching profession. Increasingly, women are not only the initiators but also the driving force behind sustainable food production worldwide and ever more women are shaping the agricultural discourse as journalists, bloggers or influencers.

For this reason, the DLG has partnered with Women in Ag Magazine for the second edition of “Women in Ag Awards”. The award ceremony will take place on 15 November.

  • How can modern agriculture feed the world while protecting the environment and climate? This challenge requires people with passion and pioneers with vision. With the maxim "Passion for Profession ", the new event “Celebrate Purpose” is marking its premiere at Agritechnica. The aim is to create awareness about the passion, issues and challenges of modern agriculture and so inspire people to a career in farming and agricultural technology. At 'Celebrate Purpose,' we not only celebrate the achievements of modern agriculture, but also encourage people to get involved in this important cause.

The agriculture sector has always been changing. These changes have recently gained momentum. “The role of women in the changing agricultural sector and the future of agriculture is pivotal I think,” says Freya. “There are some key points to consider: Women bring perspectives, skills, and talents to agriculture. In a rapidly evolving sector, diversity is essential for innovation and problem-solving. Women are taking on leadership roles in agriculture, from farm management to research and policymaking. Their leadership is instrumental in driving sustainable practices, the adoption of new technology, and industry growth. Efforts to educate and train women in agriculture are expanding. With access to knowledge and resources, women can contribute more effectively to modern farming techniques and sustainable practices. Empowering women, making their working time available to the market in agriculture, can lead to increased food security and economic growth. “

Women are embracing technology in agriculture, from precision farming to data analytics. Their adoption of these technologies can lead to increased efficiency and productivity. Women are increasingly starting their agricultural businesses, including organic farming, agribusiness startups, and niche markets. This entrepreneurial spirit contributes to agricultural diversification and economic development.

“Efforts to support and empower women in agriculture will have far-reaching benefits for the industry and society as a whole. Their involvement means creating a resilient agricultural sector, that is sustainable, inclusive that can meet the challenges of a changing world,” concludes Freay. “I find it fulfilling to work in this industry, to get involved with passion and to make a valuable contribution. Therefore, I can only encourage every woman to use our platform and network - it always broadens your horizons, brings new opportunities and strengthens your attitude.”
