The Markthal (2014), renowned for its striking architecture, is the first indoor food fair in the Netherlands. As well as marveling at the amazing architecture and colorful interior, you will find a variety of delicious food. Market stalls, shops and restaurants nestle beneath the 228 apartments, on the spot where the medieval settlement of Rotta grew into present-day Rotterdam! Experience the lively Binnenrotte on market days (Tuesdays and Saturdays), set against a backdrop of the distinctive Cube Houses (1984) and close to the many terraces at historic Oudehaven.
Can you spot yourself in the mirrored facade of this first publicly accessible art storage building? It’s as pioneering as it is logical; why shouldn't a depot have several functions besides storing art? You can also admire art at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (2021), visit the roof forest and enjoy a delicious meal at the rooftop restaurant Renilde. Then, stroll through Museumpark and visit the innovative exhibitions at the Kunsthal (1992).
The Gothic Laurenskerk (1449 - 1525) survived the bombing and is the only remnant of medieval Rotterdam. The church makes an impressive venue for the concerts that are regularly held here. You can climb the centuries-old tower. Once back down, rest on one of the benches in the small but lovely city park of Grotekerkplein. Did you know this was the birthplace of thinker and writer Desiderius Erasmus (1466)? You’ll find his bronze statue in the park in front of the church.

In the national monument het Park, with its winding paths, ancient trees and lush greenery, the Euromast (1960) is the 'golden oldie' of the Rotterdam skyline. The panoramic view from the Euroscoop at 180 metres high is even more impressive than the striking structure. Book an overnight stay or dinner at the top. Or abseil down. The historic Schoonoord Gardens (1860) is a hidden gem next to het Park.

Delfshaven is teeming with history. This is where the pilgrim fathers embarked on their ship to America in 1620 and where Piet Hein was born. The Pelgrimvaderskerk (1417) was named after these colonists. Wander past the marina and relics of the former city from when Rotterdam earned its money with herring and gin. Wheatmill De Distilleerketel and the Zakkendragershuisje (1653) are evidence of this. This place gives you an impression of pre-war Rotterdam. Antique and trinket shops, cafes, beer and gin pubs and artists' studios now thrive in this unique atmosphere.

The Rotterdam Zoo dates back to 1855 but moved from the city centre to its current location after 1940. The ditches and moats that architect Sybold van Ravesteyn devised as an alternative to fences and bars were highly innovative, as were the heated enclosures. The zoo continues to innovate today, with enlarged habitats for elephants, lions and tigers and an active contribution to nature restoration and conservation. Come and discover and protect 'faraway nature' up close.
