'Fantastic' visit enthuses new Government Minister in charge of fusion

UKAEA hosted Andrew Bowie MP, at Culham. Mr Bowie, has recently been appointed as the Minister for Nuclear & Networks at the new Department for Energy Security & Net Zero and his ministerial brief covers fusion.

Mr Bowie took the opportunity to come and see the work we are doing to bring the power of the stars to Earth for sustainable energy.

During a 90-minute whistle stop tour of the Culham campus, the Minister was briefed by CEO Ian Chapman, STEP Director Paul Methven and Chief Technology Officer/Director of Strategy, Communications & Business Development Tim Bestwick, before meeting staff at JET, the Materials Research Facility, MAST Upgrade, Oxfordshire Advanced Skills and RACE.

He commented that he was really pleased to see the ‘fantastic’ work that UKAEA were doing and to hear about our exciting plans, including STEP and the Fusion Foundations campus redevelopment programme.

CEO Ian Chapman added: “It was encouraging that the Minister found time to visit Culham so early in his tenure. We aimed to enthuse him about fusion and I think we did just that. Hopefully it will strengthen Government backing for our work to make fusion part of the world’s future energy supply – thanks to everyone who supported the visit.”
