Introduction to: General Fusion

The following article has been written by General Fusion to introduce their company, provide details on their Fusion Demonstration Plant (which will be built on UKAEA's Culham Campus) and outline future partnership opportunities.

General Fusion to build its Fusion Demonstration Plant at UKAEA’s Culham Campus

In June, General Fusion and UKAEA announced that General Fusion will enter a long-term lease following the construction of its Fusion Demonstration Plant at the Culham Campus. Built to 70 per cent scale of a commercial plant, the Fusion Demonstration Plant will exhibit General Fusion’s Magnetized Target Fusion technology and pave the way for the company to bring fusion energy to homes, businesses, and industry.

The Fusion Demonstration Plant

The Fusion Demonstration Plant is the culmination of more than a decade of advances in General Fusion's technology and represents a major milestone on the path to commercialization.

  • The partnership with UKAEA will accelerate the company's timeline to deliver a net-zero carbon future by the early 2030s.

  • The role of the Fusion Demonstration Plant is to confirm the performance and economics of the Magnetized Target Fusion technology. From there, the company will scale the technology to develop commercial power plants.

  • Construction of the facility will begin in 2022, with operations starting in 2025.

Choosing UKAEA's Culham Campus

General Fusion's partnership with UKAEA will expand its market presence beyond North America into Europe, broadening its global network of government, institutional, and industrial partners. Tapping into UKAEA's expertise in operating large fusion machines will support General Fusion as it rapidly advances its technology.

Partnerships and collaborations in the U.K.

To complete this project, General Fusion is bringing together leaders in engineering and industrial design.

Leading the design of the Fusion Demonstration Plant facility is award-winning U.K. architect Amanda Levete. Amanda and her firm, AL_A, are providing the creative leadership to showcase fusion energy's game-changing potential for mitigating climate change. Sheffield Forgemasters will identify routes to manufacture the interior vessel – a key component for the Fusion Demonstration Plant.

In addition, General Fusion is working closely with UKAEA to harness the local supplier network that will support the construction of the Fusion Demonstration Plant.
