Virtual Open Evenings

The UKAEA Virtual Open evenings continue to be a huge success - have you virtually visited yet?

Join us from the comfort of your own homes as scientists from UKAEA take you on a virtual tour of our amazing facilities.

The virtual events follow the same basic structure as our typical Open Events, but you'll get to see even more than usual! The evening begins with an introduction to fusion and the UKAEA, followed by a virtual tour of the world's largest fusion machine; the Joint European Torus (JET), followed by a tour of one of the three other major facilities we have on site. These include Culham's own fusion experiment MAST Upgrade (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak Upgrade), our robotics centre RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments), or our Materials Testing Facility (MRF).

In the Zoom breakout rooms, you have the opportunity to ask your guides questions about the tour - or anything else you want to know!

Dates for these events will be posted on the CCFE website, and will take place once a month via Zoom. To sign up, go to our Eventbrite page and follow us to receive updates about upcoming events.

Educational Outreach

We are still running educational visits for schools and universities - we've gone virtual!

Over the past 12 months we’ve been able to run a whole swathe of virtual outreach sessions for schools and universities. From running virtual visits to over 3,500 students between April 2020 and April 2021, to taking part in IF Oxford’s online ideas festival, we’ve enjoyed welcoming all who wish to find out about UKAEA’s work and research.

Our virtual educational visits give students the opportunity to learn about the basics of fusion energy, how fusion occurs in the Sun and in all stars, and what we need to do to recreate this process on Earth within our tokamaks.

Every virtual visit offers the opportunity to take a guided ‘tour’ around UKAEA’s major research facilities, hearing from our scientists and engineers about what it takes to develop and operate world-class fusion experiments.

We are looking forward to a time soon when we can invite groups back onto site, and once again take tours around the facilities in-person. However, virtual visits have allowed us to reach many of those who would not normally be able to travel to us for various reasons.

We will therefore be continuing our virtual outreach programme in the future, and encourage anyone that would like a visit for a school, university, or any other interest group to please get in touch to find out how to register for a visit to the hottest place in the solar system.

Please contact education@ukaea.uk for more details on how to book.

Work with UKAEA

Do you want to help shape the future of the world's energy? We continue to recruit a wide range of scientific, engineering, technical and support posts to enable us to meet the growing demands of our challenging fusion research and technology programmes.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) lead the world in fusion research, with a wide range of programmes working on the key challenges of putting fusion power on the grid.

Enthusiasm, an open mind and ability to learn are the most important assets we are looking for.

UKAEA is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from under-represented groups, particular from individuals from black and other ethnic minority backgrounds, including nationality and citizenship, people with disabilities, (visible and hidden) and women. Our dedicated Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Partner, with the support of our Inclusion Ambassadors, is actively promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion in the organisation to help make our organisation an employer of choice.

We will train suitable applicants who have transferable skills but who have not had experience in the nuclear industry.

We have continued to ‘virtually’ recruit, interview and onboard individuals throughout the pandemic for a wide range of opportunities, from scientific and engineering roles to professional support positions - follow the link to see our current opportunities or email our recruitment team via the contacts page:
